Ride 4 Williamsburg Winery Ride
Distance:
12.0 miles
Terrain: Mostly flat. A few gentle hills.
Difficulty: Casual
Starting Point: Merchants Square
Description:
Starting in the colonial area, the Williamsburg Winery Ride is
an easy spin down to the James River via the Colonial Parkway.
There are a few small hills on the Parkway, but they are easily
manageable. When you reach the James River at mile 3.5, consider
a stop at the beach area on the left side of the Parkway. Look
far down the James River to view the "ghost fleet" docked
several miles away. Pay close attention to your odometer for the
turnoff to Treasure Island Road. A stop at the Williamsburg Winery
is always pleasant - whether for a winery tour, wine tasting,
lunch, or just the delightful spin through the vineyards. Use
caution crossing Rt. 199 on your way back to Merchants Square
on Jamestown Road. Restrooms are available at the ride's start
and at the Williamsburg Winery.

Leave
Merchants Square by turning right (heading south) on
South Henry St.
Turn left on Newport Ave., and in 0.1 mile, turn
right to enter the Colonial Parkway. At the end of the
ramp, bear right on the Parkway towards Jamestown.
Continue straight on the Colonial Parkway. Note the
beach area on the left, and the "ghost fleet" downriver,
viewable on most clear days.
Exit the Colonial Parkway by turning right on the signed
bike path. Follow the bike path for about a hundred yards
until it ends at Treasure Island Rd. Continue straight
on Treasure Island Rd. and be cautious of sand that occasionally
lies on this stretch of road.
Continue straight on Lake Powell Rd. Treasure Island
Rd. ends.
Turn right on Wessex Hundred Rd., also signed as the
entrance to the Williamsburg Winery.
You'll reach the Williamsburg Winery. After your visit, retrace
your route back to Lake Powell Rd.
Turn right at the stop sign on Lake Powell Rd.
Continue straight at the stop sign on Lake Powell Rd.
Follow for a quarter-mile until Lake Powell Rd. ends. Follow
the sidewalk to the right that will bring you to the
front of the 7-Eleven and Jamestown Rd. This route is much
safer than the Rt. 199 option.
Turn right on Jamestown Rd. and you'll immediately
be at the Rt. 199 intersection. Continue straight at
this stoplight on Jamestown Rd. Cross the highway with caution.
Turn right onto Duke of Gloucester St. (into Merchants
Square) to end the ride. Use caution at this intersection,
as there are many vehicles and pedestrians going every which
way. |
